Who Am I?
I’m Ellison Rugg, a licensed mental health counselor based in Groton, MA. I earned my B.S. in Clinical Psychology from Tufts University and my Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Boston College. Throughout my career I’ve worked in a variety of mental health settings including a group home for adolescents, in-home family therapy programs, outpatient community mental health, and a pediatric medical office as the integrative mental health provider.
I’m a proudly autistic, queer, polyamorous, kinky and non-binary therapist who believes in decolonizing therapy and building intersectional spaces for healing. My identities inform my work both through specific lived experiences and the ways those experiences have shaped my worldview.
As a private practice therapist I offer individual therapy as well as family therapy, relational work for couples and polycules, and consultations for anyone interested in building neurodiversity-affirming environments in their home, school, workplace, or community group.

Ok but really, who am I?
Good therapy is all about the match. You deserve a therapist who is going to be attuned to what you need at this stage of your journey, and who is receptive to what you bring to each session.
I am not a one size fits all therapist.
But I might just be a good fit for you.
As a therapist, I see myself as a companion and witness for curious, compassionate self-exploration rather than as an authority figure who gives advice.
I’m a little goofy and don’t take myself too seriously. I’m willing to own my mistakes, be humble, and laugh with my clients. I love to explore metaphor and visual imagery in therapy.
I’m gentle when giving feedback, and unstructured and flexible in my approach. I allow therapy to unfold organically, integrating non-traditional and non-verbal practices into therapy when words are inadequate.
I see connections and patterns everywhere and have what I call “galaxy brain,” an ability to look at the big picture and the tiny details at the same time and see the ways it all connects.
I feel a sense of shared humanity with my clients and show up as my authentic self in therapy.
If you want to work with a therapist who is highly structured, gives advice and worksheets every session, or feels like a blank slate, I’m not for you—and that’s ok! I want you to find someone who will give you what you need. But if you think we’d be a good fit, click here to find out more about my approach to therapy.
