  • No, unfortunately I do not accept insurance, but I do accept HSA cards and superbilling.

Because I take a non-pathologizing approach to treatment, aka not focused on the diagnosis but rather on problem-solving the challenges life throws at you, I do not take insurance. I want to be able to collaborate directly with my clients on what specific kind of care will be the best fit for their needs without interference from an insurance company.

I work primarily with clients who are struggling with major life transitions…you are not inherently sick or broken because you are having an adverse reaction to change. And even for those whose symptoms do warrant a diagnosis, I want us to be able to establish your treatment trajectory without insurance pre-determining how many sessions you are allowed to have. You are the expert of your own experience and needs, not a third party.

That said, some insurance companies will accept “superbills” from out of network providers. Please feel free to contact your insurance company to ask if this is an available option for partial reimbursement. I have the paperwork on deck if needed, and we can navigate it together. For more information on what superbilling is, click here.

  • This depends on the needs of the client, mutual schedule availability, where the client is in their therapeutic process, and how much work the client wants to do outside of our sessions. It is not uncommon for me to meet with clients weekly initially but gradually reduce to every other week and then to monthly as needed.

Throughout my years as a counselor, I’ve curated quite a selection of workbooks, worksheets, psycho-education materials, journal prompts, and exercises that have received immensely positive feedback from my clients. Topics range from challenging cognitive distortions to increasing self-compassion to developing assertive communication skills to setting/maintaining boundaries to body positivity to learning how addiction impacts the brain to mindfulness/grounding exercises to atoning for past mistakes etc etc etc.

Just to be clear, homework is absolutely not mandatory. I will, however, gently point out that a significant majority of my clients who experience efficient progress towards their mental health goals put in work both within and outside of session. Ultimately healing happens at whatever pace feels right for you, and I will always meet you where you are.

I do not want to keep you in therapy forever. I want to support you as you face major life transitions, help you develop the skills to manage these changes and process their meaning, and give you the confidence and empowerment to ultimately move forward. Depending on your needs and your readiness to put in the work to create change, this may take anywhere between a few months to a year and a half.

  • Nope!

Whether you’re already working with an awesome individual therapist, or your biggest priority is seeking connectedness and community and you’re good on the individual work, come join us for group!

Please note: if you are not an existing individual client of mine, I will ask you to complete a 30-minute $75 assessment to ensure you and the group are a good fit for each other. This is separate from the free 15-minute consultation you can utilize to ask clarifying questions.

  • No you do not!

  • Counseling is a broad term that includes talk therapy, psycho-education, and skill building in the hopes of resolving problematic thought patterns and behaviors, strengthening relationships, processing past traumas, increasing mind/body connectivity, and facilitating personal growth.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that utilizes medication as a primary tool for addressing mal-adaptations in mood, thought, and perception. Psychiatrists complete medical school and are thus able to prescribe medications to clients. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners are able to do so as well. Some people choose to receive psychotropic medications from their primary care provider, others prefer receiving those services from a specialist. Counselors, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists can all assess and diagnose clients with mental health diagnoses.

It is normal and common for clients to seek both counseling and psychiatric assistance for managing their mental health symptoms. I am a licensed professional counselor, so I do not provide psychiatric services. If you would like a referral to a medication provider, I am happy to help you find one. And if you already have a medication provider, I am happy to collaborate on your treatment with them.

  • There is no charge for appointments canceled more than 48 hours in advance.

There is a 50% fee charge for less than 48-hour notice.

No-call/no-shows or cancellations with less than 24 hour notice will receive a full service charge.

This is consistent for all services provided at Capybara Counseling.

Please note: Appointment reminders are sent via email 72 hours in advance and via text 48 hours in advance to provide ample time for clients to reschedule without charges if needed.

  • I occasionally work with older teens and would love to provide a free 15-minute phone consultation to discuss your teen’s presenting concern and determine if we’re a good fit. However, I do not work with children under the age of 14 at this time. I am happy to provide referrals to other fantastic clinicians who specialize in working with younger populations.

  • My professional license allows me to see clients anywhere in the state of Ohio. If you live in a non-Columbus part of Ohio and would like to receive telehealth counseling with yours truly, that is absolutely an option. Unfortunately I am unable to see clients in other states but am happy to make referrals to other incredible clinicians in your area.

  • Capybaras are known for their kindness, gentleness, adaptability, and of course their greatest strength: spending quality time with any and every other species of animal.

That’s my whole vibe - I see the strengths in everyone I meet and am non-judgmentally present with each of my clients. Plus I’m a mild to moderate weirdo, hence random song references, so it seems fitting to have an oddball animal to represent my practice. And you’ll…Remember The Name.
